I just read 'The Book of Vile Darkness' by Monte Cook. I enjoyed the creature write-ups for Orcus and the principle figures of evil, but I found most of the book too much for a D&D game, or at least my D&D game. I don't feel any need to vilify Mr. Cook, but I suspect I'll see the book on CNN if that serial killer/shooter in D.C. turns out to be leaving D&D related messages.
I'm an odd case 'cause I'd love to see people protest or picket my store. I'd bring 'em cookies and call the local news myself. My odd perspective aside, I think an 80's style D&D hunt is ready to go.
Any thoughts on any part?

I am so ticked off by this Book of Vile Darkness bull. I was planning on trying to get my former highschool to unban D&D from the gaming club there, since so many of the d20 games require the use of the core books, but how am I supposed to do that now?
Also, this stupid thing has wasted space in both Dragon and Dungeon magazines. The only reason I bought the current Dungeon is for the Mecha d20 mini in the polyhedron section.

Heh...I have the book of Vile Darkness and I think it's great. It's well done and so very evil, it's perfect.
And it's an accessory, not a core book, so get over it. And even if you don't there ARE people who rather enjoy playing a nasty villian and there are even more people that want to fight that nasty villian. After all nothing builds a better hero than the worst of villians.
I do think that they should now make an opposing book to it though, like a book of epic heros with celestial feats and holy spells, etc.

They did. It's called the Book of Exhalted Deeds. My group uses both. In fact, one campaign the PCs decided to all play Baatezu and take over the Material plane in Vecna's name. Needless to say, they failed horribly.

It's an alright book. My DM uses it, as she is very fond of using divine focus things for storylines, and the BoVD actually does include a lot of material useful for that aspect.
Personally, I wouldn't ever allow players to use it, from a DMs perspective. A lot of that has to do with the fact I never let my players have evil alignments, since I still believe that DnD is a game of heroic characters. There are things in the book that I also think are not meant to be player material.
I am glad though, the Book of Exhalted Deeds was published, to provide a little balance to everything. The BoED is excellent, and a great accessory book for players.
I liked Vile Darkness. Not because I'd play an evil char (what's the fun in THAT?!) but because it gives great ideas for oponents (hell yeah! indeed) so that you look that much better.
Plus, I really enjoyed the book of Exalted Deeds (its complement), though I found some of the ideas a bit too crazy (the bow of poverty, for example, would kick ass for a monk!).

No no no, Kian...it DOES kick ass for a monk, LOL.
And you're absolutely right, about the Vile Darkness book. Only usable for NPC villains, IMO.

BoVD is not recommended to be used as a PC suppliment book. It is intended for DMs. There are prestige classes and such in there, but they are again recommended for DMs and NPCs. This book if used sparingly is wonderful. If it is overused, it bloats a campaign.
