I have one of the books (Players Handbook) and I know how to play. Dont make the investment of buying the books unless you have people to play with.

I've been playing 3rd ed for a while and wouldn't mind letting you know a little about something I'm familiar with. If you have any particular questions, I've been DM'ing for about 3 years and can answer them. Just post here.

Oh - and if it helps, I've got every 3rd ed. book except the adventures. I also have all the updates and downloads from WotC.

My 2 copper pieces (for what it's worth) - find a group in your area to play with first. The other players will teach you the basic mechanics of the game. Also, remember - this is a ROLE playing game, not a ROLL playing game. I would advise playing a fighter your first time out, as they are easier for novices to play, and allow you to get used to assuming a role. Wizards, Clerics, and the like are ultimately more powerful, but require a lot more planning; also, you have to keep track of a lot more stuff with these types, and for new people, this can be a huge challenge.

Please, try to avoid becoming a power gamer, munchkin, or a BAD rules lawyer. I have a GOOD rules lawyer in my group; he will point out when something is counter to the published rules, even when doing so will likely get his PC or another PC killed. The bad kind, on the other hand, will only do this when it is to their benefit; any other time, they will attept to put a twist to a rule in order to gain the upper hand.

But I digress, slightly. After you have played for a few game sessions, you will know whether or not you want to buy the books. And if you do, at that point, the price won't seem so bad.
As far as the books you will need goes, first the Player's Handbook, then the Arms and Equipment Guide, then possibly the Psionics Handbook or the appropriate Splatbook (Sword & Fist for fighters, Hero-Builder's Guidebook, etc.).

Most of the other books you don't really need unless you decide to start DMing, and you really need to wait awhile before you do that, unless you cannot find a group to join. Don't get insulted, but novice players only RARELY make good DM's. If you do invest in the Monster Manual, Fiend Folio, etc., always remember the cardinal rule: DO NOT open those particular books during play unless you get permission first, or the DM asks you to. Failure to heed this rule will get your PC killed very quickly in most groups. Your character is supposed to figure out how to deal with many of the beasts in these books through experience, not by reading up on the stats, strengths, and weaknesses of them during game play. Besides, it is more fun trying to figure out this stuff by role-play and thinking on the fly anyway. :D

Try playing Tzezz's game with me...There's someone else who wants to play - and possibly a third person, so we may even have a party after a while. ^_^

Okay, see ya'.

I've been a player for about maybe a year and a half now and am making a 3e site so i'll post a notice here when it's done if that might help you other than than feel free to ask me anything about rules and/or weapons and other equipment and even monsters. I've got the core rules and Book of vile darkness.
