View Full Version : USB Compatability

I am way new at this (just bought first PS2 three days ago). However, one of the reasons I bought this (over the XBox) was USB compatability, since I already have an MS Digital USB joystick. I'm mostly into flight sims, and I prefer the joystick over the Sony controller.
So far I've had no luck making this work though. I (naively) assumed that USB was an actual standard and that just plugging it in meant it would work without doing anything else. So far this has not at all been the case.
Any thoughts?!
Thanks,

Most likely it's on account of the drivers needed to run the device.
USB is a universal standard in that it allows connectivity of any USB device to any USB-compatible device. However you still need a driver to *run* the device, and that's why it won't work on the PS2.
Usually when you plug in a USB device to any newer computer (or any comp using WinME, 2000 or XP) it's automatically found and installed because the driver is already either in the system (usually in the case of any Microsoft USB products) or it prompts you for a quick install. In the case of the PS2, the driver won't be in the system and you would even then need a PS2-compatible driver to run it, which doesn't come with the device itself.
So in closing, even though the PS2 uses USB devices I'm pretty sure they'll still require PS2-approved devices that either use a core PS2 device driver or have some way of configuring themselves.
Just taking a wild guess here though, I'm not an expert on the PS2. :)

Many thanks for the quick reply - I should have known it wouldn't be that fast or easy (particularly since I'm trying to interface an MS device with a PS2).

What other kind of devices can you put in that USB?

Well in theory USB devices (for PCs) run the gamut from controllers like joysticks and steering wheels to other devices like printers, cameras, etc. I think however that the only ones that relate to a Playstation 2 would be the controllers, which is why I'm keen to figure out if I can make my MS Digital joystick work with my new PS2.
Cheers,
