I think FFXI Is going to ROCK!! I like online games and I think the way square worked out the battles and so one is beautiful!! I'm getting that game for sure! And when I do I need to meet some of you guys over the net so we can join forces and start kicking some ass!!!

Depends if Square wants to be greedy or not...

To be honest, I somehow doubt it.. I think Square is breaking shaky ground with its FIRST online RPG, so I don't think they'll charge online fees, because if they do.. I'm not gonna get the game!

I hate to disseminate unpopular information...
but $10/mo for an online massively-multiplayer game is not only fair... It's been going on since the VERY BEGINNING (practically) when muds finally made the jump from little text-driven worlds to fully graphically interfaced gaming communities.
Ultima Online had/has monthly fees, Everyquest did, Asheron's call did, Dark age of Camelot did, and every single online RPG to come (including FFXI) will have monthly fees.
Make no mistakes. I am CERTAIN. Not only will the vast majority of people be WILLING to pay a subscription fee, it's really only fair as well. A solo-game that only requires your console or PC alone will be finished and a packaged deal that once you bought it -- that's it... you can enjoy it completely and it doesn't require additional maintenance except maybe a patch to fix the odd post-release glitch and you don't need servers or a huge (and constantly present) customer service force to help manage the game. Solo-packaged games don't generally grow (without the purchase of new material), or are improved with expansions (which you may or may not have to buy.) Multiplayer online games ARE.
Unlike the self-contained games that came before, These online RPGs require an enormous amount of sophisticated (and expensive!) equipment to run and maintain stably to provide a pleasurable gaming experience -- Not to mention a legion of well paid (and not so well paid) people who keep said equipment running, tweak and fix the game -- (Multiplayer games are WILDLY more complicated than solos) and all this costs money. The difficulties of development and COST of maintenance *DICTATE* that everyone pay a subscription fee, or online RPGs would never get made... there are lots of reasons for this -- but I'll stick to the one that EVERYONE can EASILY understand so the majority of people don't gripe... (some people will complain no matter what -- you know who you are)
A non-online completed product can be sold and the next project just moved on-to... Every copy they sell they make thier profit and that is that. They print as many copies as will likely be bought, many are, some are not. A profit is realized -- they start making the sequel based on the potential benefit of another sequel... etc.
An ONLINE game has all this dedicated equipment (which costs money to house and maintain) and a competant and well-sized maintenance and customer service staff. All this stuff costs money... and as long as the game is running -- THIS COST WILL NEVER GO AWAY. People are still playing ultima online for YEARS (most people move on to 'the next great new game' every 2-3 years) but people have a RIGHT to be able to play the game they paid for so this overhead can never be removed from the picture. If people DID NOT pay subscription fees, the profit realized by initially selling the game to everyone would rapidly (or at least eventually) get eaten up my maintenance costs -- and lets not forget paying the developers and squaresoft and any other "parent company" involved...
...After that initial profit was gone paying for the game's maintenance -- Squaresoft, the Developers and/or whomever was selling thier product would actually be LOSING money -- because to keep the game running (and you can't shut it down because everyone PAID to play it to thier hearts content!) you need to still keep on paying for upkeep and staff.
Any businessman would see this problem, and therefore not back the project -- it would never get made. Subscription fees are the only way to make a game product like an online RPG make a decent profit over time.
So *BET YOUR BUTT* they'll be at LEAST a $10/mo charge (Longer subscriptions get you a better rate so if you paid just month to month it might be MORE.) It's as regular as green lawns in the sub-burbs for this kind of game product.
And in all truth, it's not unfair or sucky at all to expect them to do this... for around $10 bucks a MONTH (less than you can spend on a nice meal or a pizza in one day!) you get to play a ROCKING AWESOME game all month long to your hearts content, and compete in a beautiful and immersive world where all your actions can count, and you'll form REAL relationships including allies and enemies. If done right, there is NO competing with these kinds of games -- Pen and Paper RPGs with real friends and a good GM can still beat 'em... but there is never any of the hassle or scheduling of such stuff with an online RPG, and somebody is ALWAYS playing the online game -- 24 hours, 7 days... so you can game to your hearts content (some people entirely too much I think!)
So that's the straight dope -- can't/won't pay? Sorry buds.
But it's worth it and fair to charge subscription fees. With the above said, I challenge anybody to come up with a viable way of doing it differently -- in fact... post it here, and if it could work we can flesh it out and make a fortune re-revolutionizing online RPGS!
The fees are already the rule with this kind of game... and THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS of people have already been paying them for each and every big-time online RPG since Ultima Online. (many years now!)

Of course not!
And every red-blooded Final Fantasy fan, when it comes down to it -- Is going to feel the same way.
The exception might be little kids who don't understand -- or thier parents who simply CANNOT be made aware of why such charges are neccessities.
I knew a lady (best friend's mom) that all while I grew up she called Nintendo (and anything associated with it) "Intendo" -- She still does... and there is no correcting her. It's THESE people that are truly lost because I don't think they could even understand the concept of a constantly running multiplayer online game... Just that "Intendo" didn't used to cost money each month per game...

I'm going to get FF 11 and pay the monthly fee. I agree with Slands completely however. They wnat to get a profit off the consumer playing games. That's why Microsoft jumped into the gaming industry, they saw that this can now be more profitable than ever because you can charge and people will pay. The fans will be dedicated and pay the price.
Not only will they pay, but they'll play in a world where everything is dictated to them. I've played online games. I paid a lot. I mean a lot. It is costly. You think it's just $10.00 a month, but then they slowly jack up the price. Right now, email is free, but they're planning on turning all free email services into paying. Since everyone is addicted to email, they know you'll pay any price to have it. Usa.net gave in, Freeze, com, many email companies are and slowly popping off. In 1998 I was a member of Netzero when it was free, now they charge for it.
I love FF, I will get it. Because I think even more games will be online, and less will be single player. Or they'll be singleplay with multiplayer option with a fee. Since it will be console and not PC, there will be fees. But it is a marketing sham. *sigh* tis sad, but tis life.

Xbox games do have a monthly fee, it's just a standard fee to play all your games. Microsft has the most organized and well thought out Online strategy for their console. This is also the reason why you won't see FFXI on the Xbox. Square doesn't like the fact that they can't charge their own fee.

This just came in! FF11 will have the ability to be non-online! You can explore the final fantasy world all alone! I think thats cool, but where is the fun in exploring a world alone?
Masquerade

Exactly. Being on your lonesome in a game that was meant for multi-play is never any fun. Especially since the story in FFXI seems to be almost non-existent.

With your Bahamut
The prospect of playing yet another sequel-- even in the mega-hot Final Fantasy series within such a short time since the last game might prompt groans of overkill. But this follow-up ain’t your everyday FF: Like Phantasy Star Online on the Dreamcast, FFXI’s drama unfolds in cyberspace. And the distinction here is that this game is a “massively multiplayer online RPG,” similar to Everquest on the PC, meaning thousands can frolic online at the same time (early estimates put the limit at 5,000 players per world), while mere “multiplayer online RPGs” such as PSO and Diablo only let a few questers hang together. So what are all these people gonna do? Square says the game will have an overall quest like every past FF title, but they’ve yet to reveal how this story will fit into the online world. FFXI takes place on a planet called (get ready for the fantasy mumble jumble now) Vana’diel, a place populated by three character types: the Hume (humans), the Taru Taru (small Ewokish creatures) and the Elveren (tiny elvish humanoids). Vana’diel is split into three huge kingdoms—Bastaque, Sandoria and Windus—which can be explored by FFXI participants on Ps2s and PCs alike. Some areas are accessible only to certain character types, and find mini-quests specific to them in those parts of the world. What’s even more astounding is that all of this will happen remarkably soon; FFXI is slated to hit Japan in spring 2002 and could reach the U.S. by the end of the year. Still, a key detail is how FFXI will shatter the language barrier for its proposed community of international subscribers. PSO packs an elegant, if limited, system of phrases translated into multiple languages—perhaps FFXI will follow suit. A companion disc with the Japanese version of FFXI shows a teaser video of Japanese gamers sending e-mail to pen pals in American via Square’s PlayOnline service. Whether this sort of feature ties in with FFXI is also yet to be revealed.
Is it your kinda quest?
If the popularity of PSO is any measure, FFXI, running on the millions of PS2s and PCs around the world, should be infinitely more stimulating (and successful). While we hate hooking a keyboard up to our PS2s, we’ll do anything just to scratch that +9 Vorpal inch.
Calling All Nations
With Sony still vague about its online plans, Square has devised alternate means to get PS2s owners online…in Japan, at least. Noticed hardware provider NEC has wiped up a PlayOnline-brand broadband adapter for Square, which will most likely arrive on store shelves simultaneously with FFXI. The chances of a stateside release, however, are slim, as Sony’s own network will be running full steam ahead by the time FFXI hits here.
Window to the World
Can’t get enough of reality-TV shows? Then check out Square’s virtual-reality TV and take a peek at the actual FFXI world in action. Head to www.playonline.com/11livecam/livecam for a peek into FFXI’s actual beta-test environments. At the time of this writing, there is little to no activity, but things should get busy when play-testing begins later this month. By the time you read this, thousands of eager Japanese volunteers will be playing Square’s most unique FF yet.

There will also still be a story too it thru out the whole game when playing online and there is.. still the intro's the endings and stuff like that.. but i like the battle system in this and i also like the new feature where u can choose your chob class and the create your own character look ^_~ . Oh and FFXI is comming out in December late late December.. if not then they say January. there are also still summons and stuff.. well I hope to get that game soon cause i reserved the damn thing already haha. well i hope when people get this game they will enjoy this alot. wuts also kool about it, is that not just people who have PS2 can play but also people who have PC's and stuff can also play and enjoy the full features of FFXI..^_^

Final Fantasy 11 may not get a stateside release. The reason being with the servers to maintain and police, technical support to give, and games to monitor, the RPG maker's U.S. operation can't seem to do it alone. Only someone the size of EA or Sony could lay the proper groundwork. Without that, the game may have to skip a U.S. release entirly. This leave three possibilities. One, Square secures a partner to do the dirty work and the game is released in the U.S. next year with no problem. Two, the next Final Fantasy to be released in the U.S. for the PS2 could be XII, skipping XI entirly. And three, one, or all three Final Fantasy Gaidens based on Final Fantasy X schedueled for release soon in Japan may be brought to America as XI.
(that is true up to date info)(You should see it in magazines soon)
bye now

Hail all...Im kinda new to this site but im a die hard FF fan. I know all the races...someone put 3 up but didnt get the other 2 names. here they are:
Hume (Humans, well rounded chars)
Elvaan (elves, masters of close quarters combat)
Taru Taru (new class...very short, good mages)
Mithra (cat people only female hehehe....good thieves)
Galka (Huge ape like people no sex good warriors)
Some of these are odd...like the elvaans...but hey i guess they are appemting to be original. There are 3 kingdoms in the game that you can chose from. (I know them but they are very hard to spell or type). People from one country can fight people from other counties if they chose (very much lke Dark Age of Camelot if any of you have played it). It does have a fee...10 bucks i think, which is low respectivly...EQ is liek 14.
Some classes are:
Paladin, Dark Knight, Red mage, white mage, black mage, warrior, theif, bard...and a few others... 15 in all i think, with 6 starting classes btw
I'm gona get it cuz im a FF fan and MMPORG fan. Although i hear Japan is having alot of server problems with it. Maybe it will be fixed by the time it gets here. It is coming out in spring 2003 (suposudly). Not in time for x-mas ufortunatly. I have a good site if you need some info:

This game is not comming to the usa. Or if it does, it will be PC only.
Sorry yall, but the game is a bust. It did not sell at all in japan. Sold max 50,000 copies.
It has been hack to death. Square has realesed many many patches for the game, and have still not stoped the cheating.
The game requires the hard drive, and network adapter to play. Making it very expensive.
And the servers and maintance for the USA would cost a square a but load of money to run. They dont even have the resorces to set them up. They are trying to find another company like EA or sega to help with the servers.
All of this is why I dont think we will get this great game in the usa.

hmm.. :( that probably explains why there is more then 1000 importers importing this game at ffxionline.com I hope AT LEAST the pc version comes out. I hope my hype will not end with just watching videos and screen shots :( And regarding cheating ASK MANY importers about what happened to cheats and etc. THEY ALL GOT KICKED OUT of the ENTIRE GAME! That's the service that square provides for paying monthly fee. The game sounds VERY FAIR to me...

Yah, the game is not being hacked to death. It is almost unhackable, as are most MMORRGs. The servers are having trouble yes, but it has NOT canceled or even delayed US release.
TrueSayian
12-09-2002, 03:36 PM
Saying it hasn't been delayed, or even set back. Come on.
The game came out arround February in Japan. In egm, they were even saying it might not come to the USA.
And saying it wont be and hasn't been hacked, it already is. I hope they fix it, but, it is still having trouble.
Ambled
12-09-2002, 07:14 PM
You really don't know what you are talking about. It's best to find out before you say any non-sense. Where did you hear/see/read about ffxi being hacked? There was a money making bug that happend in the "auction houses" in game about 5 month ago... they fixed it in less then a day. There is no more problems that's happening to the servers.
The problems that Square is having trouble is getting a company to support the servers in US. They orginally planed to have servers staying in japan and all player just connect to the japan server. but that might not happen. What they need is Sony to help with the servers but sony is busy with they own thing with Everquest for PS2...

I seriously hope they already fixed the cheats with some patch or something. It's not like I'm against the game, Cuz I am seriously against hacking and cheating in games. I hate it infact, it ruined pso on Dreamcast.
I'm hopping it come here, but it just dont seem likely.

OK, that 50,000 number was a little low I think the real number was 230,000.
But still that is very low for a Final Fantasy title. And I do remember that square was disappointed in the sales.
