The Best sword I think is the broad, I use it all the time, but I took example's from the book Sword Maker, to make a blooding blade. but I also like the buster blade Cloud Strife uses on ff7 I think it is . that and the soul reaver from Blood Omen. they have the best attack percentages ive ever seen. besides they look cool too. But on D&D I'd use a broad sword, especially if you can find one with magic properties on it. cause they do the most damage. ~Shin

Personally, I prefer the rapier with the keen enchantment, along with a few more, LoL. Can't beat a lowered crit range...throw assassin's blade on it, and your rogue is doing an extra d6 sneak attack.
I think it kind of depends on character concept.*Shrug*

For sheer massive damage on a crit, you can't beat a Greatsword. For all around utility, a keen Bastard Sword with the improved crit feat is pretty nasty. But if you are playing a fighter type and want a really sick threat range for a crit, go with a Falchion, get it keen, and take improved crit ASAP. This will give you a threat range of 12 to 20. Add a few levels of weapon master, and it's even wider. Add in weapon specialization, and you have a weapon that threats on a 12, and does a minimum of 2d4+3+1.5*Strength bonus. Add in a high level power attack and a true strike spell, and you've got a fair shot at an auto fort save. With the threat range, you will crit about 25% of the time, doing a minimum of 4d4+6+3*Strength bonus. In the hands of a normal fighter of around 15th level (granted those are rare), you're talking a damage range of 13-25 points on a normal hit (Str=18, +3 Magical Sword), or 26 to 50 points on a crit. And that's without using power attack, or extra abilities (shocking, flaming, etc.).

But of course, in 3.5 Imp Crit and Keen no longer stack. Talk about killing a good thing...

or how about a flame tounge? or a frost brand? have both, and you could break through iron bars.

Our group hasn't jumped up to 3.5. With the way they nerfed so many of the spells and such, we probably won't either. Especially if the above is accurate. What exactly is the point of these two items NOT stacking?
I had yet to see a real problem with these powers stacking. Oh, sure, with certain prestige classes, you could get some really SICK threat ranges, but any half-decent DM can work around such issues.

While some of the spells have indeed been nerfed, I enjoy 3.5 a great deal.
They've done a good job clarifying some realtively abstract rules, and I can't complain about the changes to the Druid, Ranger, and even the bard got a little better.
I think, personally, that the majority of changes were for the better--though, admittedly, Haste does indeed now suck.
I think your group should just at least look at 3.5, War. As you said, any half-decent DM can work around issues--your group may find that they like some of the changes...don't necessarily (can't spell that word to save my life) need to encorporate the spell changes as well. =)

I wont switch to 3.5 only because I refuse to pay more money for changes that should have been done for a much cheaper price. Supplements would have been the best route for that.
As for the topic, I think the sword depends on the class honestly.

You can get all the errata off the WoTC site, I believe. Just have to pay for printing then--if you even want to print, that is, heh.
And I agree...depends on the class.

to add to the kill joy of 3.5 i also find that paying alot of money for only 20% upgrade is ridiulos espically if you can't afford it so i stick to 3rd
