Here's a few reports that I found. I'll keep you guys posted on what I hear:
Report #1:
Japanese electronics manufacturer Sony refused Monday to confirm reports claiming it plans to launch a PlayStation3 console to rival Microsoft's forthcoming Xbox.
Sony says it does not intend to reveal details of the PS3 just three months after the debut of the PlayStation2 in Europe.
"We have no plans to announce a PS3, as we've only just launched the PS2 - it would be silly for us to do that now," said a spokesman at Sony UK.
Reports in a UK national newspaper claimed that Sony had speeded up its development of the PS3 in order to compete with the Xbox, unveiled earlier this month. Sony currently holds a 65 per cent share of the global home video games market. The Microsoft console, which is expected to go on sale next year, features more powerful graphics than the PS2, but the same £299 price tag.
The spokesman would not confirm any plans for a PS3 but hinted at ongoing work on a new console.
"It's always Sony's intention to investigate new technology," the Sony spokesman explained. "When the first PlayStation launched, we immediately started looking into the technology for a PS2."
Speculation suggested that the new PlayStation model would be 1,000 times faster than the PS2.

Report #2:
Square recently mentioned that it had 11 new games in development for this fiscal year. The company has already announced six of those games, including FFXI, FFXII, the untitled Disney RPG, and Gekikuukan Pro Baseball 2001 for the PlayStation2; Wild Cards for WonderSwan Color; and the new Final Fantasy handheld game. That leaves 5 games that haven't been announced yet.
According to a company report, of those five, the company plans to release two sports games, one online strategy simulation game, one online RPG for the PlayStation2, and one RPG for a handheld platform. No specific details have been revealed, but further information will be released in the coming months.

Report #3:
Speaking at the International Solid State Circuits conference in San Francisco yesterday, Aurangzeb Khan, vice president of Simplex Solutions, discussed his company's latest graphics synthesizer. In speaking with GameSpot, SCEA representatives confirmed that the chip shown yesterday is included in its high-end GSCube workstation, which was unveiled at the Siggraph show last year. The .18-micron design houses an impressive 287.5 million transistors with 32MB of on-chip embedded RAM. This compares very favorably to the current PS2 chip, which has 42.7 million transistors and is built using larger .25-micron technology. The PlayStation2 graphics chip has only 4MB of embedded memory, which, according to several PS2 developers, has been one of the primary causes of development bottlenecks.
The question remains whether the GSCube graphics synthesizer could ultimately become part of Sony's rumored PlayStation3 platform. When asked about the prospects by the EE Times, Khan declined comment. SCEA took a similar stance, saying that there have been absolutely no announcements regarding a PlayStation2 successor. Simplex Solutions' graphics synthesizer is reportedly capable of producing 75 million polygons per second with a fill rate of 1.2-2.6 billion pixels per second. By contrast, the official specs for the Xbox indicate that an Nvidia-designed graphics chip in Microsoft's console will be capable of handling 125 million polygons per second with a fill rate of 4.0 billion pixels per second.

Report #4:
Square also reaffirmed its announcement at Square Millennium, stating that Final Fantasy XI will be released for both the PS2 and the PC. The development team will be led by Hiromichi Tanaka (Chrono Cross) and Kouichi Ishi (Secret of Mana series). In addition, the company has also announced Final Fantasy XII for the PS2, a project which is being led by Yasumi Matsuno (Final Fantasy Tactics, Vagrant Story) and Hiroyuki Itou (Final Fantasy IX). It was previously reported that Vagrant Story was Matsuno's final project, but his creative talents may bring new blood to the series. Although Final Fantasy XI will be an online network title, Final Fantasy XII will be more of a standard RPG. Other than three new FF titles on the PS2, the company plans to release remakes of Final Fantasy VII, VIII, and IX as well.
Vice President Hironobu Sakaguchi also commented on the remakes of Final Fantasy IV, V, and VI, saying that it is "technically impossible to develop on the WonderSwan Color," and he expressed interest in developing them for Nintendo's next-generation handheld console, the Game Boy Advance. Though relations between the companies have recently been distant, Suzuki stated that "we will do our best to have our games on the Nintendo system." The remake versions of Final Fantasy II and III are still on track for a release on Bandai's WonderSwan Color. Sakaguchi also added that Square is developing a new original FF for a handheld, but didn't specify which one.
Other than developing Final Fantasy titles for several consoles, the company plans to merchandise the series with an animated TV series and new character-related goods as well. Square has 23 titles in development this fiscal year - 12 new titles and 11 remake titles. Ten of the 23 games are scheduled to be handheld titles.

Atleast it would give me a good excuse to laugh at some friends of mine that bought the ps2 right on release.
i believe the untitled disney rpg you are refering to is kingdom hearts. the main character, sora, and his two partners, goofey and donald star. it also has appearences from tidus and wakka (ffX) and salfie tilmitt (ffVIII) and im guessing there are other square rpg stars making appearances.

They will not release PS3 this soon, Im certain of it. However, I think it may be possible for them to make some sort of upgrade to boost the PS2's performance. I can't say that they are doing this, as this is just something I thought up, but it is possible.

fall. So no one get their hopes up.

PS2 has a lot of capasity and power... instead of making a new console, why not make an upgrade for the PS2 systems?? Microsoft will probably do that with the Xbox, hell everytime I play Xbox I expect my TV screen to turn blue and tell me about an error and to press "CTRL+ALT+DELETE" to reboot...

Its not hard DS, remember the old Sega Genisis and how they created that 32x module for it. Well, its an upgrade piece, and she is saying why don't the sony corp. just make an upgrade piece for the PS2. Something that you can connect to the USB and power it up with more speed and junk. Its also kinda like the power pack for the N64

LOL Ctrl+alt+Del is what you hold down to reboot your computer instead of going to the start button to restart. I get errors allt he time telling me there there were "Illegal errors" and to ctrl+alt+delete to restart my comp. I have bad luck with computers >_< I expected the same to happen with me Xbox, but so far so good.
...PS3 will probably turn into an upgrade, theyve barely done anything with PS2 so far. But addons always seem to fail horribly. Hm, for some odd reason ive been thinking about the upgrade being able to play Dreamcast games for no reason whatsoever kinda like bleem but reverse and official and all. Dunno. justa thought, of course thats only if ps3 is something completely new and comes out sooner. but the more i think bout it the stupider it sounds. i got the joke. stupid xbox. How old is this info?
