View Full Version : Race/Specie Question! One messed up gene pool

I'm presently planning a character for a high-level campaign my friend will be DMing, but he's being rather snippy about how I wish to build my character. As a basis, all characters will start at level 20, though I've set to start at level 10 as a handicap.

The character class itself is a Hellcaster, which is a type of Abyssal Sorcerer of Chaotic Evil allignment. When it comes to race, he's in all ways a mutt. His parents were your everyday male Drow and a Pureblood Yuan-ti, which results in a Half-blooded Yuan-ti/Drow Hybrid that, when it comes to looks, resembles his drow heritage more. So he's a Monstrous Medium-sized Humanoid right off the bat with the racial qualities of both specie. My DM has no problem with that, but it's the next part that gets his goat.

It's possible to cross-breed further after this. Thanks to a reference from a half-breeds handbook, I found how to make a creature called a Lurker. A Lurker is any race capable of casting Shadow Walk and a monster called a Cloaker. The Cloaker has shadow controlling abilities and thus, when my character becomes enshrouded in one and tried to use Shadow Walk to escape it, ends up combining with the Cloaker to become a Drown/Yuan-ti Lurker. As a Lurker, the Cloaker exists as a living cloak attached to the Lurker's body, allowing the character slow flight, various shadow abilities, and a ten-foot tail whip attack.

The coup de grace is something my DM is completely against, which I think he's just being a tight-ass about. After acheiving Lurker status, my crossbreed character then sets out to become a Lich. As it's plainly stated in the version three Monster Manual, a character may become a Lich only of its own free will. I'll spare the little details, but I'd end up with a Medium sized Monstrous Undead Humanoid, capable of the racial spells of a Drow, the strength bonuses and racial abilities of a Yuan-ti Halfblood, a symbiotic Cloaker, and the bonuses and general specifications of an undead Lich.

I can understand why my DM would be hesitant...but his arguement is that such a character couldn't even exist under the reasoning that such a combination would be impossible. I disagree, but would like some input about the creation of such a character.

Thanks.

I'm sorry but I don’t think combining with a shadow is the same as controlling it, and wouldn’t the shadow walk just let you pass right through it? I may have just read it wrong. I don’t have the book in front of me but don’t you also loose some of your powers as well when you change in to a Lich? The symbiotic partnership is also two creatures they dont fuze in to one. Can something be symbiotic with something that is dead?

Personally, I think that's just WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY over the top. Then again, I don't like playing overly powerful characters. If I, as a character, can blow up an entire city, it's time for me to stop adventuring.

Really, it just sounds like way too much. I could buy a lich drow, a lurker, drow, a lich yuan-ti, maybe a Lurker Yuan-ti, a lich lurker drow, a drow/yuan-ti (though I think the level adjustment for that would be INSANE), or even a lich drow/yuan-ti. But all four of those things together? Why not just go for broke and ask to play an evil god?

Anyways, after all that stuff applied to your character, what would your effective level and CR be, after adjustments?

I agree with the DM... that is a little powerful. The chances of that kind of a combination happening are extremely minescule. Liches only lose their CON, which is not too bad since they change to a d12 also (a great trade for most any wizard, except for those with EXTREMELY high Con....)

If the DM doesn't allow it, he/she/it/they probably has a good reason for not letting it in.

I don't get why so many people are so obsessed with making uber powerful race/class combinations. Whatever happened to good old human fighters, or elven wizards?

More importantly, though (at least from my point of view), have you even stoped to consider the backstory for such a character? I mean, right from the beggining, he is already bonded with a Cloaker and has become a Lich. What would drive such a character?

He is already immensly powerful from the drow and yuan-ti parents, the Lurker status only drives the point home, and being a Lich is just plain overkill. Few creatures could even dream to stop this character. So, let's look at some possible drives for evil characters: power, money, higher orders.

He's got power. At this point, he could more easily gain power by setting up a base and forcing others to do his bidding. If he wanted money, well, his servants could go get it for him (by the most evil means possible, to sate the evil thirst of their master). And who in hell could possibly have a chance to order this monstrosity around?

You see, there is a reason big bad mosnters don't usually go around the world "adventuring". They don't have any reason to do so. This is what makes them lousy PCs, but great NPCs for the PCs to challenge.

If you really wish to have this character, compromise with your DM. Play the drow/yuan-ti, and tell him that the character's plan will be to bond with a Cloaker and become a Lich. That way, you have a goal you can move towards, instead of simply starting at the finish line.
